Jets Owner Wanted Team To Bench Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets have not had the 2024 NFL season many were expecting.

Following another heartbreaking loss in Week 11 when the Indianapolis Colts scored a go-ahead touchdown with under a minute to play, the Jets have found themselves in a 3-8 hole with no apparent turnaround imminent.

Jets owner Woody Johnson has attempted to make changes in hopes of altering his team's performance. Following a Week 5 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, the organization elected to dismiss head coach Robert Saleh. And on Tuesday, Johnson made the ultimate decision to fire general manager Joe Douglas, who helped New York acquire star wideout Davante Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders.

However, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini and Zack Rosenblatt, Johnson also wanted the team to make a big move regarding their four-time NFL MVP quarterback.

Per The Athletic, multiple sources mentioned that, following the Jets' Week 4 loss to the Denver Broncos, there was a "contentious meeting at the team facility." This gathering included Johnson, Douglas, Saleh and other important figures across the team.

These sources told The Athletic that Johnson "suggested to the coaches that they bench Rodgers in favor of Tyrod Taylor because he felt Rodgers' performance was holding the team back."

However, coaches and the former GM did not agree with Johnson's recommendation, talking the owner out of it by claiming this kind of decision so early on in the season "would not sit well with the locker room" and could "embarrass" the former Green Bay Packers star.

Rodgers isn't necessarily playing all that poorly himself during his first full season in New York, completing 241-of-380 passes for 2,442 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Still, the Jets have found themselves with only three wins and have dropped seven of their last eight games. As the standings sit through Week 11, New York sits in 11th place in the AFC and is on the outside looking in on the NFL playoffs.
