CHEROKEE, Iowa -- The City of Cherokee has been given permission to discharge partially treated wastewater into the Little Sioux River because of flooding damage to its treatment plant.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources approved the city's request for the temporary discharges, which were scheduled to begin on Friday.
June flooding caused significant damage to Cherokee's wastewater treatment plant, and the facility is currently unable to process wastewater because of safety and reliability concerns, according to a DNR news release.

The city has been storing wastewater in lagoons, which are now full and at risk of overflowing, causing concerns for their structural integrity. The city plans to discharge up to 2 million gallons of wastewater per day for 25 days or until lagoons are lowered to a safe level.
The city is developing short-term treatment options utilizing the lagoons and is in the planning stages for a permanent wastewater treatment facility, the DNR said.
