Phyllis Louise Martin James grew up in Savannah, Georgia, the fourth of seven children. In 1973, she married General A. James Jr., a USAF Airman; together, they relocated to the communities of Fairfield and Suisun.
Phyllis had a long history of activism in education and the Civil Rights Movement. As a youth, she was one of eight students desegregating high schools in Savannah, Georgia. As an educator, she fought for equity in education, devoting her career to underserved schools and communities.
An educator for 35 years, Phyllis dedicated her life to educating children, young adults and educators in the Fairfield-Suisun, Vallejo, and Antioch school districts and as an instructor at Saint Mary's College.
Phyllis was an extraordinary woman who loved her family fiercely, nurtured all those around her, and was a loyal and trusted friend to many. Her legacy will live on through her family, friends, teachers and students. Phyllis loved traveling, teaching and spending time with her family. She is greatly loved and missed by all who knew her. Phyllis is survived by her husband of 51 years, three daughters, their spouses, eight grandchildren and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024, at Community United Methodist Church, 1875 Fairfield Ave., Fairfield.
