Trapped workers at FedEx building escape after reported tornado

PORTAGE, MI -- Workers reportedly trapped inside a partially collapsed FedEx building made it out Tuesdsay night after a likely tornado ripped through Portage.

As of about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, there were no reports of deaths from what officials suspect were two tornadoes that struck the Portage area, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office.

There were injuries -- up to 16 people had non-severe injuries at the Pavilion Estates mobile home community when a tornado tossed mobile homes around.

Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller credited a high degree of cooperation among local police and fire departments with helping to shift aid to where it was needed most in the storm response.

He said numerous police agencies converged on Pavilion Estates, where they found about 17 homes totally demolished and 173 in total with some degree of damage. One mobile home was flipped into the road and needed to be moved.

Another had fallen into different mobile home.

Fuller said injuries at the mobile home park likely were lessened because some residents were aware a likely tornado was headed their way. They took action to take cover or leave.

Fuller gave an update on the community's emergency response during a press conference late Tuesday.

Five Kalamazoo Metro buses responded to Pavilion Estates to help shuttle residents out of the area, Fuller said. The American Red Cross is helping with temporary shelter.

At the FedEx building on Portage Road, there were reports of up to 50 people trapped inside the building at one point. Those people eventually made it out and, according to a FedEx statement released to WWMT, there were no serious injuries.

Fuller described the inter-agency cooperation as a "huge success" in responding to the emergency.
