Just before 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, a South Pasadena officer spotted an older-model Toyota Corolla with a dark headlight that ran a stop sign, police said.
The officer hit his red lights to try and pull over the offender.
But the driver sped off.
A pursuit, with speeds reaching 65 mph, lasted three minutes and covered a mile and a half, police said, before the driver finally stopped at York Boulevard and Branch Street in Los Angeles.
Turns out the driver was a 13-year-old boy who took his parents' sedan without their permission for a joyride with a passenger who is the same age, police said.
Police notified the parents, who headed to the scene and took custody of the children.
A parent of the driver didn't want to press charges for car theft, Cpl. Gilbert Carrillo said.
But the young driver and his father got a ticket for reckless evading police.
