Some Clif Bar buyers could be owed part of a $12 million settlement, but time is running out.
Consumers have until Monday, Nov. 25, to claim their cut of the class-action settlement over alleged "misleading" claims on the snack bars' labeling, according to the claims administrator.
Eligible buyers can receive a maximum $50 payment.
The complaint, filed in April 2018, contended that Clif Bar duped buyers into believing its snacks are healthy, "despite that as much as 37% of the calories in Clif's Kid ZBars and 'Classic' Clif Bars come from added sugar."
"Clif markets these so-called 'nutrition' bars with labeling and packaging claims that convey a health and wellness message with the goal of increasing the price and sales of its high-sugar 'nutrition bars,'" the lawsuit says.
McClatchy News reached out to Clif Bar & Company for comment Nov. 19 and was awaiting a response.
The snack brand has denied wrongdoing and said the sugar content in its Clif Bars don't make them unhealthy.
Here's what to know as the claim deadline approaches:
Who's eligible?
Anyone who bought original Clif Bars with "Nutrition for Sustained Energy" on the label, or Clif Kid ZBars with labeling stating "No high fructose corn syrup" between April 19, 2014, and March 31, 2023, in California or New York can file a claim, settlement administrators said.
Anyone living outside California and New York who purchased the aforementioned snack bars between March 31, 2019, and March 31, 2023, are also eligible to file a claim.
The terms of the settlement allow eligible buyers to receive a cash payment based on the type and the number of Clif Bars they purchased:
Buyers with proof of purchase can get $15 for the first 60 bars, "plus 25 cents for each additional bar" up to a maximum refund of $50, according to administrators.
When will the money come?
"It is always uncertain when these appeals will be resolved, and resolving them can take time. Please be patient," administrators said.
