Jon Heydenreich | The Mindful Minute: Eating

Dr. Peer Attia is a specialist on longevity. His book is "Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity." He has a number of YouTube videos. Our society makes a big deal out of nutrition. There seem to be new diets out every few months from paleo, to keto, to Mediterranean to vegan to vegetarian. Weight control is a major concern for lots of folks. Want to stir a hornet's nest, just mention weight.

For the most part I avoid meat. People call it a vegan diet, but I also avoid dairy, except for the periodic breakdowns when I seem addicted to ice cream. Dairy is considered liquid meat. I was reading Attia and looking forward to his advocacy of Veganish eating. This would be my moment of glory.

No glory. He is basically agnostic when it comes to diet and nutrition. What a let down! There is no data to provide much support for any of these diets as they relate to longevity.

But, there is always a "but." Attia does say that no matter what diet one follows, "even the best diet if it is in excess of energy balance will produce poor metabolic health... take any diet to the point where you consume to excess and you are out of energy balance and you accumulate adipose tissue that leaks out of the subcutaneous space and, gets into the liver and the viscera, and you are going to be unhealthy."

To be fully transparent on this issue, I was once obese according to the Body Mass Index which remains the primary measure of weight. Realizing I was obese was a shock that prompted me to research all the ways that the Body Mass Index was screwed up. A little denial going on there. Uh... my research was in vain.

Now, I am in the overweight category. Lots of folks might leap to my defense, "You are fine!" I love hearing that, but I know differently.

Be mindful - seek to be healthy.
