Kansas City police are investigating a shooting involving the Missouri State Highway Patrol during a car pursuit early Sunday that started in Clay County and ended in the city.
In a news release posted on X, formerly Twitter, MSHP said one of its troopers initiated a traffic stop at around 12:28 a.m. on northbound Interstate 35, south of Missouri Highway 210 in Clay County, but the driver did not stop and sped away southbound on I-35 into Jackson County.
A Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter tracked the car until it was dispatched to another call. Troopers then relocated the vehicle at around 12:40 a.m. and boxed in the car with their patrol units at the intersection of Linwood Boulevard and Van Brunt Avenue, the release said.
As the troopers exited their vehicles, the release said the driver went into reverse, striking one of the vehicles and then forward toward one of the troopers, who fired their weapon at the car, but the driver was able to speed away westbound on Interstate 70 before exiting at Prospect Avenue, where it came to a stop at 13th Street.
The driver attempted to flee on foot but was taken into custody, according to the release. Two passengers were detained, one of whom suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital for treatment, the release said. No troopers were injured.
The Kansas City Police Department's Division of Drug and Crime Control is conducting an investigation.
