Northern Kentucky man with rare tumor travels to Texas for life-saving surgery

A Taylor Mill man who was diagnosed with a rare tumor was told he had just months to live.Now, a surgeon at MD Anderson is taking a chance to try to save his life.In the months leading up to it, Jesse Brewer was already dealing with tragedy. His brother died of a heart attack last December, prompting him to go in for a check-up.While seeing his doctor a short time later, Jesse asked about a lump that he noticed under his armpit. Brewer was diagnosed with metastatic malignant melanoma, stage 4 skin cancer.This Monday, Brewer is hoping to become cancer-free."With the power of my friends, my friends on my Facebook group, supporting me, friends I didn't even know that I had, friends from 30 years ago, I felt uplifted enough to continue looking for some sort of way to make this work," Brewer said this week.After he reached out to MD Anderson, the surgeon's assistant sent him a text that they needed him there."And it was like no, what?" Brewer said. "This is surreal. I don't understand this, and I'm by myself, so I'm jumping up and down, almost literally amazed that I have a new chance at life again."The surgeon at MD Anderson in Houston is removing the tumor out of Brewer's left arm. Radiation treatment took the tumor from 13.5 centimeters to 7.5."I literally cried the first time I put a t-shirt back on, just talking about it chokes me up," Brewer said. "Because you can blend in with humanity again, and it's a really good feeling."Brewer also wanted to give a shoutout to a special group of neighbors in Taylor Mill who call themselves "Jesse's Angels." Whether it was getting him out of the house or giving him a ride to the airport, he said support from everyone in his community saved his life.
