In 2022, something was awakened in the Norwegian mountains...and it seems no one has learned anything, and it will be awakened all over again as Netflix plans to release the monster movie sequel, Troll 2, in 2025. The first Troll finds a monster from deep down below emerging after centuries to wreak all sorts of havoc as a community in Norway comes to realize that their tales of folklore may not have been as mythical as they thought. Now one of the most popular non-English movies on the streamer after garnering 103 million views, a follow-up was announced towards the end of last year, and we finally have more details.

Coming as part of Netflix's first international showcase event at the Tudum Theater in Hollywood (via Deadline), the streaming platform revealed details of several major movies on the horizon. Alongside the likes of Japan's reboot of the movie that inspired Speed, Bullet Train Explosion (what a title!), Korea's tale of an assassin in Mantis, and a documentary centering on Brazilian soccer sensation Vinicius Jr., Troll 2 is also now officially on the cards.
While plot details remain under wraps, the monster movie sequel will see director Roar Uthaug return to helm the project, with writer Espen Aukan also returning to pen the script. Troll 2 will reportedly star Sara Khorami, Jon Ketil Johnsen, Gard B. Eidsvold, Kim S. Falck-Jorgensen, Aksel Almaas, and Trond Magnum.

Released by Netflix back in December 2022, the first Troll is directed by Roar Uthaug, who is best known for helming the 2018 Tomb Raider reboot starring Alicia Vikander and whose other projects include the action drama The Wave, the adventure flick Escape, and the horror outing Cold Prey. Led by the critically acclaimed Norwegian actress Ine Marie Wilmann alongside Mads Sjøgård Pettersen, Kim Falck, Gard B. Eidsvold, Pål Richard Lunderby, Eric Vorenholt, Pål Anders Nordvi, Veronica Sinclair, and Hugo Mikal Skår, Troll was met with much acclaim upon release, and stands tall at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can check out the official synopsis for the first outing below.
"Deep inside the mountain of Dovre, something gigantic awakens after being trapped for a thousand years. Destroying everything in its path, the creature is fast approaching the capital of Norway. But how do you stop something you thought only existed in Norwegian folklore?"

The idea behind Troll was something that Uthaug had wanted to bring to life for some time, with the director revealing that it was "an idea that has been developing in the back of my mind for over 20 years." After ruminating on the idea for so long, it should come as little surprise that there have long been ambitions for a sequel, with producer Kristian Strand Sinkerud teasing what's to come while speaking with What's on Netflix.
"As filmmakers, you always have ambitions to make something that can last a little longer than one film. Of course, we have ambitions to make a sequel and perhaps two sequels, but it all depends on how the audience are responding to Troll."
