Gas prices in Texas continue to drop as a record-breaking amount of Thanksgiving Day travelers plan to hit the road to visit loved ones, according to AAA.
The Bryan-College Station area has an average price of $2.65 per gallon, which is a 3-cent decrease from a week ago and a 29-cent decrease from a year ago. The state average is currently $2.68 per gallon and last year was $2.77. Lubbock has the lowest average right now at $2.42 per gallon while drivers in El Paso are paying the most for gas with an average $2.93 per gallon.
AAA is predicting nearly 5.3 million Texans will drive 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving, the highest travel volume on record for the holiday. After several years of pandemic-conscious traveling, this year's data is showing a return to more traditional Thanksgiving travel plans, according to GasBuddy. Nationally, 72% of all Americans plan to drive to their destination, compared to 41% in 2023 and 38% in 2022.

"Americans are eager to get back on the road and visit loved ones this Thanksgiving, with the vast majority choosing the flexibility and convenience of driving, as gas prices have fallen below $3 in over half of the nation's states," Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in a statement. "We expect prices to remain seasonally low leading up to the holidays, making road trips a more affordable option for millions of Americans."
